Codo de los Andes

Codo de los Andes is a unique geographical formation where the Andes mountain range changes direction, creating an exceptional mountainous landscape. It is a meeting point of diverse ecosystems, making it a place of great interest for nature lovers.

Main attractions and activities

  • Trekking to the viewpoint
    Moderate-difficulty trails lead to panoramic viewpoints; the hike takes between 3 and 5 hours (approximately 9 km) with an ascent of around 500–800 m.

  • Swimming in Las Cuevas
    Several routes connect to waterfalls and natural pools, perfect for a refreshing dip.

  • Condor watching
    It is common to see condors soaring near the viewpoint.

  • Camping / overnight stays
    Some routes offer the option to camp or spend the night in improvised “refuges,” providing authentic nature experiences.

How to get there?

  • Private vehicle: Mixed road (paved + dirt) from Samaipata; 4×4 or a vehicle with good clearance is recommended.

  • Taxi / tour: Prices range from Bs 100 to 200, including guide and transportation.

  • Group arrangement: It is possible to negotiate for a taxi to wait during the hike (extra Bs 20–30).

Climate and best season to visit:

Temperate climate. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from late October to July, when weather conditions are more favorable for outdoor activities.

  • Carry cash (there are no shops along the trail).

  • Check weather conditions and avoid the rainy season (December–April).

  • Plan your visit in advance; tours usually include a box lunch.
